Should SEO Be Licensed Like the SIA

  • 13 January 2026

Abstract
Debate is ramping up over whether SEO professionals in the UK should need a license, much like private security workers do under the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Right now, SEO plays a huge role in who gets noticed online, how information is accessed, and how much people trust what they find, yet the industry remains mostly unregulated, leaving room for hit-or-miss results and some questionable practices. This article looks at whether adopting a model similar to the SIA’s could help set higher standards, protect clients from getting burned, improve the industry’s reputation, and keep sensitive data safer. Drawing on real-world examples from cybersecurity and digital marketing, it highlights the benefits of licensing, such as clearer accountability and more public trust, but it doesn’t ignore the complications—SEO is subjective, and the digital world moves fast. In the end, while licensing could help fix many of SEO’s current headaches, any approach would have to be flexible enough to avoid getting in the way of new ideas and progress.
